Diana Nyad is kind of a bad ass. No, not kind of. One of the premier athletes in the field of Open Water Swimming, Nyad had a dream to swim from Cuba to Florida, braving the weather, the jellyfish, the pain, and by sheer force of will and the incredible support of her team, she makes attempt after attempt. This film has two of the most powerful performances of the year and while Annette Bening learned the fundamentals of open water swimming which is CRAZY impressive, it's really Jodie Foster who brings the big acting guns to the film. I'm actually obsessed with her performance, and if you liked Nyad, you must watch the documentary called The Other Shore: The Diane Nyad Story. Therein, you see Nyad's incredible grit, but you also see the woman on whose Foster's performance is based - Nyad's best friend and team leader, Bonnie Stoll.
Both films are incredible, and sports genre movies are in my top 2 favorites (behind only musicals) because they contain so much heart, so much grit, and whether the athlete or the team wins or loses, it's the passion and the hard work that really get me. This is one such outstanding sports genre film. Open water swimmers are no joke and they mean business on any day of the week, but this story is inspiring and powerful and worth every minute. I truly loved it.
