The Color Purple is the movie remake of the staged musical remake of the original film directed by Steven Spielberg in 1985. The stage show, which itself won 4 Tony Awards, was the natural next step for the original film, and this is the next step in The Color Purple's ascendency. We know the story, Miss Celie comes to live with "Mister" who abuses her terribly while she takes care of his family's cast of characters. Through her friendship with the famous performer Shug Avery, Celie finds her voice and her personal power.
This film was truly fantastic. The cast was marvelous and the limitations of the stage are totally overcome in this film version. I would assert that every one of the female leads could have easily been nominated for an Oscar, but Danielle Brooks in Oprah's iconic role of Sofia figuratively murders the whole production with her wit, her talent, her gravitas, and this nomination is so well deserved that it's hard to imagine this Oscars season without her.
I saw this film in the theater and I enjoyed every single minute of it. It truly blew me away! Definitely worth your time, and if you haven't seen the stage musical, give that a go, as well.
