Maleficent is a delicious little film about a fairy with a strong protective instinct (Angelina Jolie) and the curse she bestows upon a king who has betrayed her and her kind. It is the kind of wonderful film in which we are afforded the opportunity to walk in the shoes of a character we have grown up knowing to be evil. Maleficent cares for and grows to love the child she has cursed, and as the story we know plays out, we are rooting for Maleficent and for the child.
Because we are in a land of fairy tales, the costumes are creative, beautiful, evil, and inspiring. This movie was most certainly a contender, as well, for production design and sadly just didn't make the final cut. Normally, movies like this end up with nominations for costume even though they are in fairly weak movies (i.e., The Great Gatsby); not so with Maleficent. The costumes are indeed worthy of Oscar nomination, but if you come for the costumes, you'll stay for the film and for Angelina Jolie's rich performance that works on every level.
I'm a fan of Maleficent, and if you see it, you will be too.
