Wolfwalkers is a delightful animated film that I would never have even heard of had it not been nominated for an Oscar. It is the story of Robyn who dreams of being a wolf hunter like her father. The Lord Protector has ordered the extermination of all wolves and when she ventures out hunting, she meets a mysterious girl named Mebh. This brave and wonderful girl introduces Robyn to the world of the wolves, and Robyn herself becomes a magical creature who can go back and forth between being a human and being a wolf, thus making her a Wolfwalker. Robyn discovers that Mebh's mother has been captured in her wolf form by the Lord Protector who intends to execute her in front of the town. Mebh and Robyn work to free the mom, and to educate the town that wolves are to be embraced, not murdered.
Wolfwalkers is actually part of the filmmakers call, "the Irish Folklore Trilogy" preceded by The Book of Kells and Song of the Sea (which was also nominated for an Oscar). If you have the one of the others, you'll know the tone of this film following fantastical ancient myths with beautiful animation. I love films with strong, female protagonists, and this one is no exception.
