Blonde - 1 nomination

Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role
Ana de Armas

The life and career of Marilyn Monroe is Blonde's story, and boy, is it bleak.  If you believe the film, poor Norma Jean had very few happy moments in her entire life, her marriages were hopeful but sad, her fame was nothing but a terrible burden, her self-doubt was debilitating, and her relationships were constantly abusive.  I don't know the real story but this film was a hell of a long downward spiral.  The only happy moments in her life came in a polyamorous relationship that landed her pregnant (and delighted) but the studio forced her to have an abortion she absolutely didn't want.

Ana de Armas certainly deserves some recognition for her portrayal of the star (the voice intonation, WOW!), but every time her real accent slipped through in her dialogue, it distracted me.  Not only that, but de Armas' body type is very thin and very narrow - she could be as small as a size 0 or 2.  Obviously Marilyn Monroe was not a large woman, but it is well known that she is wore a real size 14 or 16 (in today's sizes, probably about a size 6), and Hollywood's obsession with making a thin but sturdy woman into a petite, tiny one is offensive on its face.
